Veterinary Orthopedic Care & Animal Surgery
Orthopedic care at Bee Ridge Veterinary Clinic helps to reduce joint pain and bring mobility back to your pet's body. Our orthopedic services, including animal surgery, treat pets that have been diagnosed with musculoskeletal and joint problems. Muscle, ligament, tendon and joint problems may range from a crucial ligament tear in the knee to osteoarthritis. Our goal with every pet that we treat is to restore mobility, minimize pain, and enhance your pet’s quality of life.
Cutting-Edge Orthopedic Care Restores Mobility, Relieves Pain
Many orthopedic problems are related to the aging process. You may notice your pet can no longer run as quickly when playing fetch, walk up and down stairs, or jump onto the bed. Natural wear and tear to the musculoskeletal system can lead to joint pain and arthritis. Depending on your pet’s pain and mobility restrictions, orthopedic animal surgery is one treatment option to restore mobility and help your pet live an active lifestyle.
Orthopedic surgery is a major surgical procedure with a significant recovery period lasting between three to six months. The recovery process also requires extensive rehabilitative care. Consequently, not every pet is a good candidate for orthopedic surgery. Some elderly pets may be better treated with pain management medications, rather than surgery. Our veterinarians Dr. Ronni Tudin and Dr. Robin Sego have substantial experience with orthopedic animal surgery. They will carefully evaluate your pet’s overall health before making a recommendation regarding any surgical procedure.
If your pet has sustained an orthopedic injury such as a torn cruciate ligament or a patella luxation, surgery is typically necessary to correct this injury. Our veterinarians begin the treatment process with a full physical evaluation and diagnostic digital X-rays to determine the extent of injury. Next, our team will discuss your pet’s treatment options in detail with you and determine the best course of action. We want you to feel comfortable and confident that you are making the right choice for your pet’s health. Same-day orthopedic animal surgery is not typically performed unless your pet requires an emergency operation.
To prepare for orthopedic animal surgery, we conduct diagnostic blood work to ensure the safe administration of anesthesia. Our vets also recommend withholding food 12 hours in advance of the procedure; this reduces the risk for possible anesthesia complications. Since orthopedic animal surgery is a complex procedure, we typically keep pets overnight to monitor their condition and immediate recovery. Once your pet is ready to return home, our veterinary care team will discuss the post-op recovery process in detail and send your pet home with pain management medication. Our veterinarians will schedule rehabilitative care for your pet along with post-op check-ups.
While the recovery process from orthopedic surgery is not an easy road, the difference for your pet’s mobility and overall quality of life is significant. Thanks to orthopedic care, our veterinarians have helped pets go from painful limping to walking with ease.
